Squadron 80 Safety Program

In keeping with the emphasis on safety outlined by California Wing , Squadron 80 has a multi- faceted safety program with emphasis on education, and monitoring.

Education:

The goal is to educate the squadron on safety issues, and safety awareness, as well as the safety program itself. This will be accomplished through;

  1. Weekly Safety Briefs - Once a month a list of Safety Topics will be published for discussion at the beginning at each squadron meeting. A copy will also be posted on the bulletin board. One of the main sources for topics will be the monthly safety news letter published by HQ but other sources will be used as appropriate. Each Item will be initialed when presented. Due to a request from group, the copies of the safety briefs are kept on file at the squadron.
  2. Monthly Safety Meetings - On the third Monday of every month a presentation will be made by either my self or a guest speaker. A schedule of topics will be published as far in advance as possible and posted on the bulletin board. Whenever possible, the topics will be coordinated with the local FAA Safety Program and RHV Tower and Management.
  3. Bulletin Board/Reading File - A bulletin board and reading file will be maintained with safety related presentations, publications and schedules of events. It will be updated monthly or as required.
  4. Squadron Web Page - Safety information, articles, and presentations will be made available on the squadron Web Page whenever possible. This will not only provide an alternative method for squadron members to get information but will also serve as a resource for the rest of CAP.

Monitoring/Reporting:

In order to ensure that safety procedures are followed, a program of monitoring critical areas and safety reporting will be maintained. The program will include;

  1. Pilot/Member Currency Database - This has proven to be difficult to maintain. In the past, a bulletin board has been maintained in the squadron where pilots can post their currency information. This has continued to be the primary vehicle through which currency and qualification information is exchanged. Going forward, I recommend that a computer be set up in the squadron with a current copy of the wing database that pilots can use to update their information directly. This can then be periodically uploaded to Wing as required.
  2. Random Checks - Random checks will be conducted in the areas of flight operations, Maintenance, and Facilities. Records of those checks will be maintained in the squadron files and copied to the squadron commander
  3. Safety Improvement/Hazard Reports - Copies of the appropriate CAP and FAA safety and incident reporting forms will be made available to the squadron. The members will be briefed on their proper use, location, and purpose.
  4. Quarterly Safety Reports/Annual Safety Survey - Quarterly Safety Reports and Annual Safety Surveys will be conducted and kept on file at the squadron per guidelines.
