January, 1997

The weather is iffy, but your skills don't have to go south with the geese.

THE BAD NEWS... YOU'RE GROUNDED

Trees dripping. Overnight low's in the mid-30's; afternoon high's the same. Cold. Clammy. Miserable. With no VFR weather anywhere that you can get to, your flying is restricted to a couple of circuits around the patch. Planning your occasional X-C, your concern isn't so much required fuel as it is, "Who can I phone to come git me if I can't make it back?" You've moth-balled the fleet for the winter and you're waiting, with questionable patience, for the end of the gloom and the return of the sunshine. Well, settle in Padnuh. It's gonna be a while before you can reasonably plan to slip the surly bonds.

THE GOOD NEWS... YOU CAN USE THESE DISMAL DAYS TO YOUR ADVANTAGE

Find a simulator and bring your instrument scan back up to speed. If your CFI is with you, you can log the time as a phase of WINGs. And, if like so many folks, you've got the machine in the barn for an annual, work with your A&P. Since FAR Part 43 allows you to do all sorts of worthwhile, practical and preventive maintenance, take advantage of it. The money that you save is a consideration and the knowledge that you'll receive is priceless. Aircraft owners may perform simple or minor preservation operations and the replacement of small standard parts not involving complex assembly operations in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions using the proper tools and calibrated equipment.

Airplanes

A log book entry is required following the accomplishment of all owner maintenance. The elements that must be recorded are: date, total time, description of the work, pilot's name and certificate type/number. If there's the smallest hint, the slightest bit of doubt, in your mind, stop working and check with the supervising A&P.
