Why airplanes crash: On December 23, an aircraft impacted
terrain 20 miles northeast of San Jose, California, aircraft was
destroyed and two pilots were fatally injured. On October 2, an
aircraft impacted terrain 3 miles east of Petaluma, aircraft was
destroyed and four people were fatally injured. On November 8,
an aircraft collided with terrain near Arcata, California, the
pilot and three passengers received fatal injuries. The risk of
being involved in an accident of this type is linked to a number
of factors. This safety program will look at ways these and other
terrain flight accidents could have been prevented by making us
more aware of the risk factors involved.

The Bad News: You're out of control and heading for the weeds.
The Good News: You'll soon be making some new acquaintances
The Bad News: They're from the FSDO and they'll not
be happy to see you
Ahhh, Spring at last. Crisp mornings. Sun-dappled days. Balmy evenings. Cool nights. An occasional rain squall to keep the dust down before the certain arrival of the summer scorchers. The flying weather you've been dreaming about. Even looks like there might be a watch under that green foggle strapped to your wrist.
You've had the airplane checked by your A&P and you've spent time tuning up with your CFI. Your destination is forecast to be CAVU and the FSS briefer said you'd be able to circumnavigate the few widely scattered April showers in the area, no problem. As you approach your destination airport, Tower advises, "...a squall passed over the field five minutes ago. No braking action reports. Cleared to land..."
Eight knot crosswind component from the left. The wet runway makes for a super-smooth touchdown at 75 IAS. You're looking confidently at the first turn-off. You gently tap the brakes. Nothing. Hmmm. The second turn-off'll work just fine. Sixty-eight IAS. Apply the brakes with a little more authority. Still nothing. Oops. Fifty-seven IAS. Mash any harder on the brakes and you'll be leaving heel marks on the asphalt. The aircraft begins to weather-cock and slowly drift right of centerline. Insert your expletive of choice (Hint: Hmmm or Oops won't get it). Were you either able or in the mood to watch your tires during your trip towards the tundra, you would have noticed that rotation had ceased during Hmmm, stopped during Oops, and might have even started in the opposite direction during your expletive of choice. You're hydroplaning, Pal, and you're along for the ride.
Early research into the phenomenon that occurs when water is trapped between the tire and the runway indicated that hydroplaning speed equals nine times the square root of the tire pressure. Sometimes. We now know that the 9 times formula depends upon the condition of the runway, the condition of the tire, and the phase of flight. Is the runway grooved, crowned, or grooved and crowned? None of the above? How much tread is left on the tires? The research was conducted using brand new, out-of-the-box tires. The FAA requirement for tires, are: if they don't hold air, replace them. Any flat spots? Replace them. Running on slicks like the pain-in-the-butt-my-dad-still-pays-for-my-tires neighbor's kid? Replace them. Is the runway clean or dirty, particularly in the touch-down zones? Even a light mist on a runway covered with rubber and exhaust residue makes for difficult taxiing, let alone maintaining directional control of your aircraft at speed.
On take off when the tire is up to speed, the 9 times applies. On landing, when the tire must spin up, hydroplaning occurs at 7.7 times the square root of the tire pressure.
Using the C-172 as an example with the POH-recommended inflation of 29 psi on 6.00-6, 4-ply tires: the square root of 29 is approximately 5.5. Five point five times 9 equals a take-off hydroplaning speed of 50 knots. On landing, however, the tires may hydroplane at speeds at or greater than 42 knots (5.5 x 7.7).
How can you apply these numbers to your operation? If it doesn't look right, sound right, feel right or smell right as you approach the 9 times number, abort the take-off. When landing on a wet runway, know what the winds are doing. Plan your approach and touchdown so that you can stay off the brakes until your speed is something less than the 7.7 times number.
It's the hardest thing in the world to stay off the binders after a crosswind landing on a wet runway when all you want to do is to get it stopped, but stay off 'em you must until your speed decreases to the point at which the tires are in good contact with the surface; notskating on water. Unless, of course, you'd like to get the names of some of the guys over atthe FSDO to round out your Christmas Card list.
As little as one ten-thousandth of an inch of water can support hydroplaning.
Wake Turbulence: Why Bernoulli invented it, why everybody
makes it, why big 'uns make it bad, how you can avoid all of it.
Module 3: More pre-flight planning and preparation prior to
leaving for the field: flight plan - communications plan checklist
- flight kit checklist - survival kit checklist - putting your
passenger in First Class; a safety/comfort checklist.
