SIC SAC (Significant Information for Sacramento Pilots)

Over the next few months I will be discussing the way the FAA wants maneuvers accomplished on certain practical tests. For this month I have selected the soft field landing.

Many of the same problems associated with the soft field take-off are found in the soft field landing. The major problem being, breaking the aircraft or yourself if you mess up.
The second major problem being, pleasing the FAA on your Check ride.

Starting with a stabilized approach is always a good idea. Stabilized meaning, being aligned with the runway, and within the proper airspeed, depicted in the aircraft’s manual or in the Practical Test Standard. After reaching a selected point above the ground the pilot would slow the aircraft’s descent rate to allow the aircraft to touch down on the main wheels with the weight on the wings. This is accomplished by adding a certain amount of power at the bottom of the descent and maintaining that power throughout the landing and subsequent roll out. In a real soft field situation it might also be necessary to add power once the touchdown has occurred, to keep the nose wheel from digging into the soft surface.

The most successful soft file landings will be the ones where the aircraft touched down with power, on the main gear with the weight on the wings. Back pressure would then be applied on the elevator, keeping the nose wheel clear of the surface, until the elevator control was at full back travel, at which time the nose wheel would contact the surface with as least momentum as possible. Power would then be adjusted to taxi the aircraft to a harder surface (if available) where the aircraft would be more maneuverable. Remember, the elevator control would stay in the full back position throughout the landing and taxi. All of this has to be done while keeping the tail from dragging the ground or allowing the aircraft to bounce.

As always, please review the practical test standard for other information necessary for the soft field landing.

If you have any suggestions to improve this letter please call me at your earliest convenience.
Good luck and Safe Flying. I’ll see you at a Meeting.
PS. Many Thanks to AVEMCO for their sponsorship of the Wings Program.
They have a part in all of our Safety Meetings.
