May, 1997 Article on Density Altitude
"Once I was on a plane and the pilot said we hit an air pocket- that's where there's no air- and dropped 30 thousand feet in one second, but then it hit some air and bounced back up again. We would have suffocated, but he was a pretty good pilot."
Somebody wrote, in the FAA publication Density Altitude, "When it comes to good old-fashioned hangar flying sessions, one subject that never seems to be discussed is density altitude." Balderdash! Density altitude is always on the agenda, albeit just far enough down on the list of stuff upon which we are required to ruminate that we don't always get to it right away.
The Flyer sputtered and popped, cooling in the salty and salubrious zephyrs that cobbled the Carolina dunes as overhead, gulls and terns chided the impertinence, the temerity of the men that would join them above the saw grass at Kittyhawk. Wilbur, Orville, and Charlie, standing alone on Killdevil Hill, perhaps still blinking from the final blinding burst of magnesium powder in the photographer's flash pan, set the Official Hangar-Flying Agenda which we are honor-bound to observe even today:
Hangar-Flying Agenda: 1. Whose turn it was to buy beer; 2. Girls/dudes; 3. The faa's latest attempt to tax general aviation out of existence and give the national airspace system to the airlines; 4. There i wuzzes...; 5. My airplane is faster/prettier/better-equipped/newer/ easier to land/hauls more fish than yours; 6. Writing your congressman; 7. Forget your congressman. if it weren't for AOPA... 8. Lawyer jokes; 9. Doctor-in-Bonanza jokes; 10. More there i wuzzes...; 11. The weather; 12. Lunch; 13. Density altitude. 14. Adjourn.
Twenty-three hundred pound C-172 in out-of-the-box condition at Fresno's Chandler on a 72o day for a 45-minute VFR no-brainer to Mammoth Lakes. The Density Altitude penalty is a ho-hum 10%; 985 vs. 895 feet to get airborne and a 570 fpm rate of climb instead of 630.
Off FCH at nine. Setting the chocks at ten. Cab to town for a greaseburger and a stroll. Back to the field by three, three-thirty.
Return flight from Mammoth Lakes where, like Fresno, it's a 72oF day. But, your take-off roll will be 3850 feet. That's in the weeds at Chandler. Calculate your rate of climb. It'll stand the hair up on the back of your neck: 75 fpm. In your C-172 in out-of-the-box condition. And if the wind is from the South, you'll be looking at turbulence and wind shear, which is OK as long as the downdrafts don't exceed 75 fpm. So while the O.A.T. is smack dab in the middle of your personal Comfort Zone, the Standard Temperature; the temperature upon which your Performance Data Charts, assumptions and calculations are based, is 33oF.
Your airplane's wing and powerplant think that it's ISA +40o and that they're at 8,500 m.s.l. Try this: next time you're at 8,500, add full power, if you're not there already, and tell me if does anything other than make a little more noise. Now, imagine a take-off with that power setting. Bottom Line: failure to plan for and respect the effects of Density Altitude can kill you.
And yet, the more I look at the Official Hangar-Flying Agenda, the more convinced I am that Wilbur, Orville, and Charlie got it right. We will, therefore, stick with the Official Hangar-Flying Agenda as established. And , in spite of my colleague's erroneous assertion that Density Altitude "never seems to be discussed", the San Joaquin Valley aviators will remain steadfast to the traditional agenda as originally introduced by our historical and philosophical antecedents. A discussion of Density Altitude will, I'm proud to say, continue to be an integral part of every Hangar-Flying session. Time permitting.
