FLYING TO ALASKA
Southeast Alaska is an unusual environment for the pilot. The terrain is uninviting and the weather changes very quickly. The presentation speaks of alternate ways to fly to Alaska, discusses the weather issue and alerts the pilot to some unusual airport environments. There is a brief discussion on survival in the event of an off field or water landing. In general the beauty and grandeur of Alaska is fraught with pitfalls. I try to, without being negative, describe the situation and enlighten the pilot so that their Alaska experience is fulfilling. With careful preparation it will be.

SAN DIEGO FSDO AREA

CHANGE IS INEVITABLE - AND WITH IT COMES OPPORTUNITY

On January 1st of this year, the reins of the San Diego Flight Standards Safety Program were passed on. I have returned to the Operations Unit, working in Certificate Management, with very mixed emotions. While the majority of my experience is in on-demand air carrier operations, my tour as the Safety Program Manager has been one of the most rewarding times of my life. I’ve made some life-long friendships, and I’m looking forward to maintaining those relationships while continuing to support the safety program we’ve all worked so hard to build.

The program will now be overseen by Inspector Michael Harris & Inspector Fred Christlieb. Both Mike and Fred are assigned to the program on a full-time basis. Dedicating additional personnel to the Safety Program has been a goal of the FSDO for some time, but fiscal year 1998 has finally allowed this goal to be realized. Mike is an Operations Inspector (Pilot) with an extensive rotorcraft and airplane background, and is a naval aviator. Fred is an Airworthiness Inspector (Mechanic), with airline, corporate, and US Customs backgrounds and holds a private pilot certificate. With this team, the safety program in San Diego will be able to expand into areas that previously were not possible.

In order to allow Mike and Fred to transition into their new positions, and develop new programs and personnel, we are going to limit the February safety seminars to the CFI Workshop, in process, and "Flying to Alaska" on Tuesday, February 17th. We welcome your comments on what you have enjoyed in the past, and what you haven’t. What would you like to have programs focused on in the future? In addition, during February, Fred Christlieb will be developing a program for Aviation Maintenance Technicians, and is currently interviewing potential mechanic and repairmen candidates for appointments as Aviation Safety Counselors. We would sincerely appreciate your frank comments, critiques and concerns. Thank you for your dedication and devotion to keeping our aviation system the world’s best! It’s an honor to serve you.

Keith Ballenger
