Changes to the

SoCal Aviation Review

A new look and more information.

We’ve changed the SoCal! Our intention is to provide you with more news and information while continuing to notify you of our Aviation Safety Seminars. Our budget does not allow us to add additional pages so we have elected to provide short news clips and then give you a pointer to where you can find more information.

The meeting notices have also been reformatted so that more will fit on a page. However, they still contain all the same information and each contains a contact number just in case you have further questions. Please take the time to read the "Note for all Seminars" .

The World Wide Web is fast becoming a major source of information for airmen. Many of our articles will direct you to a specific page on the web. A more complete edition of the SoCal can be found on our FSDO web pages (see back cover for address) or at:

www.pilotage.com.

If you are not connected to the web now is a good time to consider it. We have begun to discuss when we will discontinue mailing you a paper copy of the SoCal and provide it to you only via E-Mail and of course on our Web pages.

Flying to Las Vegas?

A call for help from the Las Vegas FSDO.

Pilot deviations for airspace incursions are increasing at an alarming rate in the Las Vegas area. If you’re headed that way please spend some extra time to study the airspace in that area.

Questions? Call the FSDO (702) 388-6482 or see their Web page at: www.awp.faa.gov/organ/lasvegas.htm

Caution:

Runway Incursions!

Long Beach is # 2. You can help!

During the past 14 months Long Beach Airport has experienced a serious increase in runway incursions. Of the 27 total runway incursions since January 1997, 20 were pilot deviations, 2 were controller deviations and 5 were vehicle deviations. The Long Beach Air Traffic Control Tower and the City of Long Beach is asking everyone to assist in eliminating the problem. We must all work together, heighten our awareness and exercise caution when circumstances dictate. If you have any questions or would like information you may call the Long Beach FSDO Ops Safety Program Manager at (562) 420-1755.

Summer is coming;

Think Density Altitude

Hot, high and humid weather conditions can change a routine takeoff or landing into an accident in less time than it takes to tell about it.

Density altitude effects are not confined to mountain areas. They also apply at elevations near sea level when temperatures go above standard. (59 F or 15 C)

From the pilot’s point of view, an increase in density altitude results in:

1. Increased takeoff distance.
2. Reduced rate of climb.
3. Increased true airspeed on approach and landing (same IAS).
4. Increased landing roll distance.

To calculate Density Altitude refer to your Aircraft Pilot’s Operating Handbook or ask your FSDO for the P-Pamphlet entitled "Density Altitude" (FAA-P-8740-2)

Logging of Pilot-In-Command Time

Questions on how and when you can log PIC? See the explanatory article by Al German on the LGB FSDO Web Page.
