Summer Skies

The pilot was experienced. He had 1800 hours of military flight time and 2,200 hours of civilian flying, had flown the company Cessna 310 or 421C almost daily during the past year. He was instrument qualified and instrument current. Along with a friend and his son, he took off from Amarillo, Texas for Helena, Montana one warm summer day.

Near Fort Lupton, Colorado, the controller advised the pilot that there was a level six thunderstorm ahead. The pilot replied that he "didn’t see anything."

Witnesses saw an in-flight flash fire and portions of the Cessna’s left wing and empennage separated before impact. There was a post crash fire and all three died.

Summer is a great time to explore, maybe stretch our wings a little. Spring and summer are also great times for thunderstorms.

We learned about the three stages of a thunderstorm using the single cell storm as a model. In real life, such a storm is quite rare. Weather experts now name five types of thunderstorms that can be more subtle and difficult to see with the naked eye:

  • Multi-cell Storms
    • Clusters of Single Cell Storms
    • Feed off each other’s energy
    • Storms that generate more storms
  • Mesoscale Convective Complexes (MCCs)
    • Organized clusters
    • Mainly in the Midwest
    • Can be hundreds of miles in diameter
  • Air Mass Thunderstorms
    • Pop up without a front or low pressure system
    • Happen during warm, humid afternoons
    • Can be embedded in clouds or haze
  • Squall Line Storms
    • Ahead of a Cold Front
    • Form lines stretching hundreds of miles
  • Super Cell Thunderstorms
    • Called steady-state
    • Winds and humid air at all levels can keep a super cell active for hours.

So what can we do? Know the conditions that can produce a thunderstorm: warm, moist air and some kind of lifting action.

The higher the dew point, the greater that body of air’s capacity for holding water. Greater humidity equals greater instability. Under these conditions, an apparently insignificant lift might begin major storms. Lifting can be from thermals, rising land or pressure changes.

Now is the time for summer adventures and great flying. With a little preparation and planning, your trip will be filled with the kind of joy we flyers thrive on and all thunderstorms will be experienced from the ground.

Kathleen O'Brien, LGB SPM

Instrument Corner

Instrument flying will bring you near or into weather. Especially when a trip is outside familiar territory, how you prepare for the weather environment could mean a successful journey or a disaster.

Begin flight planning by looking at what is happening now. Use reports of actual weather such as satellite images, (they’re are usually updated hourly with a 12-hour animated sequence showing weather motion, large area radar reports.)

Surface maps are the next stop. They define fronts and pressure patterns and areas of instrument conditions or visual conditions.

Now, go to the big picture of what is predicted. Here winds aloft become significant. You want to know winds at several flight levels. They provide the rails on which the weather train rides. What kind of a ride can be deduced by looking closely at the winds both for velocity and direction.

Significant weather prognostics show what is expected over time. Combine these with wind and the surface data, and you have a moving picture of the forecast weather.

Next comes the briefing. Here you are collaborating with weather professionals who can refine and clarify what you have learned. Ask for significant weather bulletins, SIGMETS and AIRMETS. Ask for Notices to Airmen that could affect your flight. Here, be alert to any navigation aids anywhere near your route that may not be in service. Were you to have to change plans mid-flight, it’s important that any navigation aid you use for the change be up and functioning properly.

While enroute, you can monitor weather by listening over VORs that have hazardous in-flight weather advisory service (HIWAS), listening to the Automated Weather observation System (AWOS) or Automated surface observation system (ASOS) or the ATIS (automatic terminal information service) at airports you are overflying, and Flight Watch on 122.0. Flight watch is the place to ask for and to submit pilot reports (PIREPS).

By going to our web page (www.awp.faa.gov/flightstandards, then to non-FAA Sites, then to AvWeb, then Brainteasers, Quiz #16 will give you a great review of making and receiving pilot reports.

Kathleen O’Brien, LGB SPM
