Hidden Danger in Hot Starts
What you need to know to avoid
engine damage
Hot starts can be exciting and expensive. On hot days you can actually damage your engine and aircraft without knowing it.
The temperatures in your cowling become extremely high after a shut down when air flow stops cooling the cylinders. Be sure to follow the manufacturers instructions if you need to start a hot engine. A carbureted engine may become a problem after being shut down on a hot day.
The manufacturers instructions generally explain that to avoid damage to the engine and cowling, you should turn on the fuel pump to be sure the engine driven pump and carburetor can keep the engine running after the initial start. Failure to do so may cause the engine to "kickback" from a lean condition or cause an "air box" fire. The kickback can damage your starter, ring gear, starter attach point and on Continental engines damage the starter and starter adapter.
An air box fire is difficult to see from the
cockpit and may do major damage to the aircraft. If you suspect
air box fire, you should continue to keep the starter engaged
until the engine starts. This can extinguish the fire by taking
away the fuel/air source. ![]()
Dressed to
Kill?
What you wear, can save your life
Packing for a summer flight can be fun. Ever fly from Palm Springs into the LA Basin or out to San Diego? On these long summer days it can be pure joy - warm breezes, tee shirts and beach shoes.
With the long lazy days sometimes our trip back may takeoff a little later in the day, El Nino maybe drops by for a celebrity guest appearance or maybe the air over the mountains cools down faster that you expected.
Summer flying can take us over terrain that sports winter weather conditions, everything from freezing temperatures to snow and ice. People have been known to survive forced landings in the San Bernadino Mountains only to die of exposure before they were found.
What about a summer survival kit to be included in the packing? Consider:
- a warm jacket
- long pants & sturdy shoes
- water, nonperishable snacks
- a thermal blanket.
These items wont add more that a few
pounds to your load and they can add a few years to your life.![]()

Top 3 Danger Zones
Avoiding Midair Collisions
The NASA Air Safety Reporting
System (ASRS) is a voluntary anonymous
system for gathering safety information. Perhaps the most
important aspect of
this system is that we can learn not only what happened, but why
the incident
may have happened.
Do you think you know the DANGER
ZONES in and around the Long Beach
Airport? Here are your choices, what ones do you pick as the
spots most often
named by pilots for Airborne Conflict and Collision Incident
reports? Name
the top 3;
2-3 miles NE of John Wayne Airport between 4000-6000 feet AGL
1-2 miles SE of John Wayne Airport between 4000-6000 feet AGL
3-4 miles SE of Torrance Airport between 800-3000 feet AGL
1-6 miles E of Corona Airport between1000-3000 feet AGL
1-4 miles S & W of the Queen Mary between 500-4000 feet AGL
